Developing a Hypothetical GP Surgery to Deliver Scalable and Inclusive Simulated Virtual Placement: Harnessing Real Human Interaction, AI, and Data analytics for an Authentic and Immersive Experience

-

Presentation

Expanding placement opportunities is a global priority to address workforce shortages and strengthen healthcare delivery. Simulation now plays a key role, with regulatory bodies such as the NMC (2023) supporting its integration into practice learning. This project developed a virtual placement for pre-registration nursing students using EHR systems, AI, 360° simulations, and live simulated patients. Designed through a multistep, co-creative process, the placement enhanced students’ understanding of primary care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and digital literacy. Results showed improved confidence, knowledge, and clinical competence, demonstrating that virtual placements offer a scalable, sustainable solution aligned with NHS workforce and digital transformation priorities.
